STRATEGUSSTRATEgic GUide to Smart manufacturing

As STRATEGUS approaches the completion of its Marie Skłodowska-Curie Global Fellowship, several of its research results are being consolidated and extended through GLACIER, an open-source initiative for modeling, simulating, and validating modern manufacturing systems.

GLACIER is a collaborative effort involving STRATEGUS and the ICE Laboratory at the University of Verona. It provides a common framework for many of the ideas investigated during STRATEGUS, including structured machine models, continuous-time physical dynamics, deterministic simulation, digital twins, software validation, and integration with scheduling and optimization techniques.

At the core of the ecosystem is Frost, an open-source simulation platform built on Lingua Franca. Frost makes it possible to reproduce machines, software services, communication infrastructure, and control applications inside deterministic virtual manufacturing environments before moving to the physical shop floor.

The platform has already been validated using the ICE Laboratory manufacturing testbed, while additional validation and new demonstrators are being developed.

GLACIER is intended to continue beyond the STRATEGUS fellowship as an open research infrastructure that other researchers, students, and industrial developers can use, extend, and contribute to.
